District 19C Lions Clubs 2017 Walk for Diabetes Awareness - 5K
Saturday, May 6, 2017
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Bradley Lake Park
Puyallup, WA
There is a great need for community-based diabetic retinopathy examination programs to assure early detection of retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy progresses in an orderly fashion from mild to more severe stages when there is not appropriate intervention and it is a leading cause of visual impairment in working-age diabetic adults. In 2016, the cost for one ophthalmologic examination screening was $116.00; the cost for ocular abnormality identification was $188.00; and the cost for one preliminary identification of diabetic retinopathy referral was $478.00. These costs will only continue to rise. This year the District 19C Lions Clubs 5K Walk for Diabetes Awareness will be concentrating on raising money so we can give out $500.00 needs-based grants to individuals living within the District 19C geographical area, who need to have ocular health screening to detect ocular abnormalities and receive diabetic retinopathy treatment. With your help by walking in this event, we will help fight diabetic retinopathy.
